Like all Tunisian cities, El Jem offers the opportunity of savouring a sheer variety of authentic dishes, mainly its typical couscous, served with mechouia salad (peppers, garlic, onion and grilled tomatoes, sprinkled with olive oil). One can also enjoy in El Jem a typical variety of bread and pastries.
The Roman heritage is now perpetuated in a local very active craft. Around the coliseum, you will find artisan workshops producing friezes, paintings and furniture items in the tradition of ancient mosaics. Also worth noting is El Jem Mergoum, a typical carpet with beautiful designs.
